A Welcome from the Director
This show has always had a special place in my heart ever since I was first introduced to the original soundtrack back in 2005. The way the authors have built an incredibly fun and funny show, including unpredictable guest audience spellers, and all without having sacrificed the integrity and heart of the show for the sake of laughs, is not only a testament to their skill but also speaks to the importance of live theatre and how it connects us to our community and our humanity. The story of these youthful characters and how they are navigating their personal foibles and idiosyncrasies and balancing pride and fear—it is something we have all felt. What if I am not good enough? Does anyone really know me or understand me? Who am I if people put their own perceptions of me over who I really am? Difficult questions handled with humor and aplomb and set to incredibly fun music by the brilliant William Finn, who the world just lost a few months ago. Of all his great works, this will forever be my favorite, and I hope you all enjoy the magic he has gifted us with as much as we in the production have. Thank you, Mr. Finn, for your legacy, and thank you, patrons, for sharing in this story with us.
